Geospatial Intelligence (GEOINT) —
GEOINT stands for geospatial intelligence and refers to the study of various forms of data surrounding a subject’s geographical location. Much like OSINT (open-source intelligence), the GEOINT discipline has roots in the US military but has since enjoyed a global spread into the public and commercial sectors.
Anything from GPS coordinates, on-the-ground photos, and social media location tags can qualify as applicable geospatial intelligence data. Its application is vast and varied, and it is crucial to many sectors, including the military, emergency services, commercial software, agriculture, telecommunications, automotives, health care, insurance, and more.
A significant aspect of GEOINT is the extraction of precise location data. Geospatial intelligence can deliver all kinds of benefits by pinpointing the exact location of billions of online devices. These include enabling applications to deliver more effective services, providing potential criminal evidence, and boosting digital forensics.
Meanwhile, GEOINT employment helps counter all kinds of natural or manmade disasters more effectively. These could vary from humanitarian relief efforts after a natural disaster, mapping the evolution of an epidemic, containing riots, or other forms of violent civil unrest.
