Cybersquatting —

Since the dot-com bubble of the late 90s, web domains have been seen as high-value commodities, especially for companies. At present, this value extends to social media handles as well. The name a company uses online is an important part of effective branding strategy—an insight is not lost on savvy individuals and competitors.

If someone can anticipate the value of a particular domain, they can register it with a view to receiving a handsome payday at some point in the future, when some company or other badly needs it. Meanwhile, commercial competitors can do the same but hang on to the rights just to scupper the marketing strategies of their rival.

A benign instance of cybersquatting happened when two teenagers in Melbourne, Australia, purchased the domain “tiktoks” in anticipation that TikTok would become the next social media phenomenon. Following the platform's popularity, the parent company ByteDance offered to buy the domain for $145k. When the cybersquatters rejected the offer, a lawsuit was filed against them, resulting in the domain being transferred to ByteDance.
