Deepfake —

A portmanteau of "deep learning" and "fake", deepfake is a term used to describe manipulated media created through the employment of machine learning technologies. This can include images, video, and audio, doctored in ways that appear genuine while, in fact, being totally artificial. This type of falsely convincing media can be a harmful form of misinformation against politicians, celebrities, and others.

The prevalence of tampered videos in the porn industry—accounting for 93% of all deepfakes created—is a growing concern, as it raises questions about consent, privacy, and the possibility of blackmail. In addition, there is a growing fear that fabricated content could be used for propaganda purposes, with experts warning that fake media could be created to influence political opinion. With the number of altered videos doubling every six months, there is a need for increased awareness and countermeasures to combat this evolving threat.
