Smear campaigns, smear tactics, or just a smear˜ are measures to damage or call into question someone's reputation by spreading negative propaganda with the help of discrediting tactics. Such campaigns can be applied to both organizations or individuals.
While smear campaigns have existed since ancient Greece, the Internet has become more pervasive. Due to negative rumors and whispers posted on forums or brazen criticism on social media, companies can find themselves in trouble with their clients or even the authorities. For example, in 2022, the E-commerce unicorn Meesho found that influencers who had been defaming the organization online were being paid by a rival digital media company.
