Gray Hat —

Gray hat hackers occupy a murky ethical space in the hacking world. They may be doing something illegal, but they don't have malicious intent like black hat hackers. Instead, they might hack into a system to show its owners where and how to fix the vulnerabilities, essentially providing a public service. What sets them apart from white hats is that they do not ask for permission to do this and are not employed by the company.

However, even if their actions might have good intentions, gray hat hackers still risk legal consequences, and their methods are not always appreciated by the organizations they target. Unlike white hats, the cyber endeavors of gray hats don’t comprise what they actually do for a living. Yet, they can still monetize their pen testing by finding zero-day vulnerabilities and selling this information at special zero-day auctions.
